HTC Hero Getting an Android 2.0 Upgrade

HTC Hero Updated Google Android 2.0 Eclair

The HTC Hero Android-powered phone will be updated to version 2.0 Eclair on new phones and Hero owners will be pleased to hear that they're getting it too.

Sourcet from HTC Twitter,

"Yes, we are working on an Eclair update for the HTC Hero. Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS. Please be patient while we work to provide you with a tightly integrated experience like the one you are already enjoying on your Hero."

The update will be available for both the original European GSM version of the Hero, and the CDMA Sprint version on sale in the US.  However distribution of the update for carrier-branded versions of the handset will require negotiation between HTC and those carriers, so it might not be released as early as software for the unlocked GSM model.

It is learnt that HTC has been using Android 2.0 in-house for some time now and would be porting it to its phones in the near future. The Hero might be the first HTC handset to actually get it - thanks to its premium nature. If this happens, it will be the second phone after the Motorola Droid to come with Android 2.0

A lot of carriers in Europe and the US have announced that the HTC Hero will be soon available probably with a release date just in time for X-mas. The phone features multitouch capability and Adobe Flash. Specs wise there’s a 3.2 inch 320×480 pixels display, a 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack,built-in GPS, 3G connectivity and an integrated Accelerometer and a Digital compass.
